START DATE FOR STRATFORD LEISURE CENTRE ANNOUNCED

At the end of this week the swimming pools will be closed and work will begin to drain them down on Monday 22 December.

The main work on the centre will start in the New Year, beginning on Monday 5 January and is due to be completed in September.

Cllr Lynda Organ, Finance and Physical Resources Portfolio says: “This is one of the most important developments in the town for many years and our aim is to create a quality facility which is used by people across the District and beyond. As part of the Council’s commitment to sports and leisure, we promised to deliver a refurbished visitor and leisure centre in Stratford and it’s fantastic to see these plans getting closer to completion.”

Cllr Mike Brain, Technical Services Portfolio says: “I am pleased works are starting on the facility. This is an exciting moment and great news for people in the District. I look forward to seeing the progress of the refurbishment over the coming months. This is yet another milestone and example of how Stratford District Council is continuing to deliver excellent services – despite financial challenges.”

Steve Speller, Joint Managing Director at Speller Metcalfe said: “The new leisure centre will be refurbished to the point it is almost unrecognisable – a fantastic building providing facilities of a great standard for the general public. As a local Midlands contractors Speller Metcalfe is proud to be delivering such an important scheme.”

Phase 1 incorporates ground floor refurbishments and rear extension including a new entrance and external works, new café area and extension, new village and group changing facilities and plant refurbishments and upgrades. On the first floor the spector and seating area is being upgraded alongside a new meeting room, spin and dance studio and refurbished crèche.

Phase 2 moves onto the refurbishment of the swimming pool alongside a new sauna and steam room. The existing pool tanks will be re-lined and the pool surround re-tiled, with general renewal of finishes to certain areas.

Finally Phase 3 will deliver a new front entrance and climbing wall, new reception area and communal space, new group exercise studio and refurbished toilets and dry changing area, and the newly refurbished sports hall.

During the refurbishment work it is intended that the gym, all weather pitches and group exercise classes / dance studios will remain open as normal.
