Work Begins on Net Zero Transformation of Ryecroft Community Hub

Speller Metcalfe has officially begun work to transform Ryecroft Community Hub into a net zero exemplar facility – a flagship project that will champion sustainability, training and resilience in the heart of Walsall.

Funded through Walsall Council’s Community Capital programme and backed by the Government’s Towns Fund, the project has been procured via the PAGABO Decarbonisation Solutions Framework Agreement. The retrofit will significantly reduce the building’s environmental impact and create a live demonstration site to showcase the benefits of low-carbon technologies to both residents and local businesses.

Delivered with a fabric-first approach, the works include external wall insulation, window upgrades, LED lighting, solar panels, a suspended ceiling and electric vehicle charging points. Once complete, the centre will serve as an educational resource for those looking to better understand and implement energy-saving measures.

Matthew Bailey, Divisional Director at Speller Metcalfe, said:
“The Ryecroft Community Hub retrofit is an excellent example of how modern construction can directly support the local community. This project will not only deliver long-term carbon and cost savings, but also provide a much-needed space for training and learning. We are proud to play our part in creating a sustainable, inclusive future for Walsall.”

The Hub already leads on multi-community energy and environmental projects and is now aiming to expand its impact further by establishing a training academy. With more than 30% of adults in the Blakenall ward lacking qualifications, the academy plans to offer 450 training opportunities over the next three years – helping residents move closer to the jobs market.

Paul Staples, CEO of Ryecroft Community Hub, said:
“We would very much like to promote training and raise awareness of the need for people to be able to produce their own power, rather than relying solely upon the energy companies.
We will soon be in a position to demonstrate first-hand how savings can be made and CO₂ emissions can be lowered by adopting a fabric-first approach and subsequently installing renewables to allow the centre to become resilient to financial shocks.”

The Hub will also provide guidance to local residents and businesses on how to access funding – including carbon credits – to improve energy efficiency in homes, with a view to reducing fuel poverty and improving health and wellbeing across the borough.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Acting Leader of Walsall Council, added:
“As a council we are keen to support projects like this that benefit local communities and help the borough to meet its ambitious carbon reduction targets. The exemplar building will provide opportunities for local people to learn about the benefits of renewable energy and access funding to help them improve the energy efficiency of their homes.”

The scheme is expected to be completed later this year and will help secure the long-term legacy and sustainability of Ryecroft Community Hub as a vital asset for the local community.
