Construction begins at former Atherstone Leisure Centre
Work is underway to clear the former Atherstone Leisure Centre site, marking a key milestone in plans to deliver a brand-new community leisure facility.
Demolition work has now begun at the former Atherstone Leisure Centre and Memorial Hall, marking an exciting milestone in the redevelopment of the site and the start of the next phase in delivering a brand-new leisure centre for the community.
Since Atherstone Leisure Complex closed its doors for the final time in April work has been progressing behind the scenes to prepare the site for demolition. During this time the Council has been removing equipment and contents from the building and carrying out a range of statutory surveys required before demolition could begin. These measures are essential to protect those involved in the demolition process and ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation.
Demolition work commenced on 11 August 2026 and is expected to continue over the coming months as the site is prepared for construction. The new leisure centre is being delivered by Speller Metcalfe in partnership with North Warwickshire Borough Council and represents a significant investment in modern leisure and community facilities for residents across North Warwickshire.
Once completed, the new centre will include a 25-metre swimming pool, learner pool, splash pad, fitness suite and studio spaces, community rooms, café facilities, and a Changing Places facility. The development will provide accessible, high-quality leisure and community facilities designed to meet the needs of residents of all ages and abilities, whilst supporting healthier and more active lifestyles.
Councillor Margaret Bell, Chair of Community and Environment Board, said:
“It’s fantastic to see demolition work now underway and the redevelopment of the site moving into this exciting new phase. While many people will have fond memories of the former leisure complex, this marks the beginning of a new chapter for leisure provision in Atherstone and across the wider borough. We look forward to seeing progress continue as we move closer to delivering a modern facility that will benefit our residents and visitors for generations to come”
Councillor David Wright, Leader of the Council, said:
“The start of demolition represents another major milestone in our plans for the site and brings us one step closer to delivering a new, state of the art leisure centre for North Warwickshire. The demolition programme will be carried out in stages, and we’d like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while this work takes place. We look forward to keeping the community updated as the project progresses.”
Mark Hudgeon, divisional director at Speller Metcalfe, said: “It’s exciting to see the project reach this important stage. Demolition is the first major step in transforming the site and brings us closer to delivering a state-of-the-art leisure centre that local people can enjoy for years to come.”
