BIRMINGHAM YMCA ANNOUNCES SPELLER METCALFE AS BUILDING CONTRACTOR FOR ERDINGTON DEVELOPMENT

Known as The Orchard, the site is already home to YMCA Birmingham residents who live in an existing multi-storey accommodation block. The new building will help the organisation meet the rising demand for resident facilities in the local area, as well as allowing for expansion of the conference and training provision that already exists on site.

Alan Fraser, CEO of YMCA Birmingham said: “We’re delighted to have appointed Speller Metcalfe and look forward to a strong and positive working relationship.  Having already successfully completed a new YMCA facility in Cheltenham I was able to talk to colleagues there who were glowing in their praise of the company.  That made them the natural choice for this project.”

Des O’Neill, Construction Division Director at Speller Metcalfe, said: “We have worked hard to design a building that meets all the requirements of YMCA Birmingham while achieving cost savings and value for money as well as a lasting positive legacy for the local community.

“Having already completed the YMCA project in Cheltenham and with another on site in Gloucester, we have an understanding of the requirements of both the YMCA as our client and most importantly the new tenants who will become the regular building users.”

The traditionally built, four-storey building will incorporate 34 self-contained units on the upper two storeys – all with their own bathrooms, kitchen and lounge facilities. The mixture of accommodation will enable YMCA Birmingham to meet the needs of tenants who are able to live more independently.

Downstairs, the ground and first floors will form a new community centre, a cafe, conference facilities and a catering kitchen, which will be available for rent by the general public.

As well as the new four-storey building, Speller Metcalfe will be building a multi-purpose hall that can be used for a range of sports and community purposes.

The new project will complete in December 2015.
