FIRST SPADE HITS THE GROUND AT PERDISWELL LEISURE CENTRE

The traditional ceremony, which celebrates the first spade hitting the ground, was attended by Mayor Cllr Roger Knight, Council leader Cllr Simon Geraghty and Des O’Neill, managing director at Speller Metcalfe.

“It’s fantastic that after all the work, consultation and planning which has gone on behind the scenes, we’ve finally reached the point where aspirations for Worcester’s new swimming pool have become a reality,” says Cllr Roger Knight, the Mayor of Worcester.

“It will be a great asset for the city, helping residents and visitors learn a life-saving skill, have fun and stay fit.”

The £10.5 million project will deliver a new 8-lane swimming pool for Worcester, enabling the City to host regional competitions for the first time.

As well as the new swimming pool, the centre will undergo a large refurbishment project to bring it up-to-date with modern standards and provide new facilities including a fully refurbished sports hall, fitness studios, 120 gym stations, café and enhanced wheelchair access for users.

Des O’Neill, managing director at speller Metcalfe said: “Today moves us a step closer to delivering high quality leisure facilities for Worcester, enabling local residents and those from further afield to train and compete at the highest level in the new pool and centre facilities.

“Speller Metcalfe is excited to be a part of this new development – particularly because as a local building contractor, the project will enable us to provide local employment opportunities for suppliers and sub-contractors in the region.”

Following the opening of the newly refurbished centre in 2017, the new pool will replace the existing Sansome Walk leisure centre which will subsequently be closed.
