Breast unit expansion underway in Worcester
A Worcestershire Breast Unit is currently undergoing a huge expansion to enable twice as many women to access screenings and treatment.
Based at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Speller Metcalfe has been appointed to carry out the £1.84 million major construction programme, which will expand the site by more than two thirds.
Designed by Pinnegar Hayward Architects, the project will see a new single-storey extension built onto the existing unit to improve services.
“The new Worcestershire Breast Unit extension will bring state-of-the-art breast imaging facilities to Worcestershire and use the latest breast imaging technology,” said Tom Potts, Directorate Manager (Breast Services) of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
The unit will continue to support the whole of Herefordshire and Worcestershire with upgraded mobile trailers that will enable better access for remote patients and those with limited mobility.
“As a local contractor we are delighted to be involved in the build of an exceptional new service for residents on behalf of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust,” said James Speller, pre-construction director at Speller Metcalfe.
“Following numerous years of experience in delivering NHS schemes, we will be working to both strict COVID-19 health and safety measures and doing everything we can to minimise impact on patients, staff and visitors to the hospital over the coming months.”
Alongside the additional screening and ultrasound facilities, the extension will enable weekend screenings to ease NHS service pressures and reduce waiting times, as well as provide nationally accredited training to develop and recruit the future Herefordshire & Worcestershire Breast Radiology workforce.
Construction work is expected to complete this autumn.
