Topping out ceremony celebrates project milestone for new sports centre

A ceremony was held to celebrate the new sports complex on the site of the new Chellaram Sports Complex at Beggars’ Bush in Bristol being officially watertight.

Individuals from the project team, Clifton College, Alec French Architects and Speller Metcalfe attended the event which was a significant stage and milestone to reach.

Regional contractor Speller Metcalfe is constructing the new building on the site of the previous indoor sports done which was outdated and no longer fit-for-purpose.

The enhanced new sports and associated facilities are due to complete in September 2024, for use by both the College and local community groups.

This new building will be the most significant improvement to the sports site since 1912, promising to improve the provision of sports facilities to the local community and create a modern new environment.

Mark Hudgeon, Director at Speller Metcalfe said: We’re delighted that the new Chellaram Sports Complex is officially watertight. The team has worked hard to reach this milestone despite the challenging weather conditions over the past few months and we’re pleased that the scheme is still on track to complete in September.

Unlike the existing sports hall, the new development will include bleacher seating for 208 people to enjoy viewing sporting events, as well as associated facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, equipment storage and a plant area.

The replacement dome has been designed to have a much-reduced energy consumption in comparison, and will meet current energy efficiency and sustainability standards, including BREEAM Excellent.
