Speller Metcalfe Celebrates Multiple Wins at West Midlands Constructing Excellence Awards

Speller Metcalfe is celebrating an exceptional evening of recognition at the 2025 West Midlands Constructing Excellence Awards, taking home four prestigious awards including the coveted ‘Winner of Winners’ title.

At the heart of this success was the Animal Studies Centre at Dudley College of Technology, which secured awards for Integration & Collaborative Working, Retrofit, and ultimately the Winner of Winners accolade – testament to its ground-breaking approach to sustainable construction and teamwork.

A first-of-its-kind IPI Lite retrofit, the project transformed a disused 1950s gymnasium into a state-of-the-art, low-carbon educational facility. Built to Passivhaus principles, the scheme achieved exceptional carbon savings – cutting embodied carbon to just 51kgCO₂e/m², well below industry benchmarks. Designed and delivered through a truly integrated alliance approach, early supply chain involvement and behaviour-based team selection ensured a transparent, no-blame culture throughout.

Also recognised on the night was Dudley College of Technology, who were nominated by Speller Metcalfe, and named Client of the Year following their leadership in championing sustainable, collaborative construction across multiple IPI projects. Their forward-thinking, retrofit-first approach reflects a deep commitment to decarbonising the education sector and creating long-lasting impact.

Speller Metcalfe’s success continued with a further win for the Redditch Police and Fire Hub, awarded in the Delivering Value category. The £18m combined facility, constructed for West Mercia Police and Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, overcame significant environmental challenges to deliver a high-quality, cost-effective public sector building. Collaboration between all partners ensured the scheme was delivered on time and within budget, despite the complexities of a former landfill site and the presence of protected wildlife.

“Our projects are only made possible through the strength of collaboration and the shared ambition to challenge the status quo,” said Managing Director, Adrian Speller. “These awards are a reflection not just of innovative design and construction, but of people coming together to deliver something truly exceptional. We’re incredibly proud of our teams, our partners, and our clients – particularly Dudley College – whose leadership and vision have helped raise the bar for sustainable construction.”

Following their regional wins, Speller Metcalfe has now been shortlisted for the South West Constructing Excellence Awards, taking place in July. The Animal Studies Centre is also a finalist in the Low Carbon Project of the Year category at the upcoming Construction News Awards – further national recognition for this pioneering project.
