“Certificate of Excellence” for Chard Leisure Centre

The hard work of the construction team at Chard Leisure Centre has once again been recognised with a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ from the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme.

Midlands-based building contractor Speller Metcalfe is working on behalf of Alliance Leisure for South Somerset District Council to build the town’s new leisure centre as part of the Chard Regeneration scheme. The £14m project involves construction of 25-metre swimming pool, gym, various exercise and fitness studios, an adventure play facility and a café.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) is a not-for-profit, independent organisation which was founded to raise standards in the construction industry.  Contractors voluntarily sign up to the scheme to abide by their Code of Considerate Practice which has been designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements and standards are monitored through regular site audits.

An ‘excellent’ score of 43/50 was achieved on the project’s most recent audit in March, matching the score given for its first audit last year. The site team was praised for their work with the Chard community – including supporting the local food bank – and for their commitment to creating a safe working environment within COVID-19 protocols.

“The overall appearance of the site was exceptionally good and gave an extremely positive impression of the contractor and industry. Despite prevailing coronavirus limitations, the contractor has continued to interact with the broader local community,” commented the CCS auditor.

“It is clear the contractor has the utmost consideration for the site impact on neighbours and the public at large.”

Praise was also given for Speller Metcalfe’s approach to ensuring their sites are inclusive and provide excellent facilities for operatives of all abilities and genders, and for their work around supporting and raising awareness of mental health.

Speller Metcalfe regional director, Mark Hudgeon said: “We are very proud of the Chard team’s CCS achievements and the progress of the project in general.

“It is fantastic to see the team upholding Speller Metcalfe’s high standards in spite of the significant challenges faced over the last 12 months and we look forward to seeing the project come to a successful conclusion later this year.”

Construction of the centre is expected to complete in late 2021 and will be opened to the public in spring 2022.
