Construction work completed at The Brookfield School as new sports hall officially handed over

Major construction works at The Brookfield School, Grandstand Road, Hereford, have now been completed, delivering a £4.5 million package of new and improved facilities. Completion of the works culminated this week in the official handover of the school’s brand-new sports hall. The milestone was marked with a celebratory photocall involving council representatives, school leaders and project partners.

The £4.5 million improvement project, delivered by contractors Speller Metcalfe, provides a modern, high-quality sports hall, new teaching block and internal alterations designed to significantly enhance the learning environment for students and staff.

The completion is a significant step in Herefordshire Council’s ongoing £12 million programme, which aims to deliver high-quality and sustainable education facilities for children and young people in Herefordshire with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Councillor Harry Bramer, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Assets, said: “We are delighted to see the completion of these important improvement works at Brookfield School. The new sports hall and upgraded facilities will provide pupils and staff with a modern, welcoming and inclusive environment that supports teaching and physical wellbeing. This investment reflects our continued commitment to delivering the highest‑quality educational facilities for Herefordshire children with SEND.”

Michelle Parkes, Headteacher of The Brookfield School, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has worked so hard to deliver this project, especially to the Local Authority and Speller Metcalfe for seeing it through. The look on the pupils’ faces and the pride they feel, has been worth all the effort. The new sports hall will hugely enhance the curriculum we deliver, as well as creating additional recreational space. The new teaching spaces are beautiful and bright, and the pupils are really respectful of the investment shown in them.” #

Dafydd Lawday, CEO of the Mercian Trust, which Brookfield School is part of, said: “These new facilities are a game‑changer for The Brookfield School. The sports hall and teaching spaces don’t just look impressive — they create real, tangible opportunities for our pupils to learn, grow and thrive. We are hugely grateful to Herefordshire Council and the Department for Education for their support in bringing this project to life. Their investment has helped deliver a modern, ambitious environment that our children truly deserve.”

Mark Eaton, divisional director at Speller Metcalfe, added: “It has been a privilege for our team to work with Herefordshire Council and The Brookfield School to bring these improvements to life. We are proud to hand over a high‑quality facility that will serve students for many years to come.”
