COVID-19 Business Update 11.05.2020

Following the announcement of a temporary closure of all sites on 24th March, Speller Metcalfe has announced a phased return to some site operations.

In order to minimise contact between operatives and to ensure social distancing, those sites which are reopening will initially do so with a reduced workforce. Construction activities will be carried out in line with revised protocols and protective measures that have been developed in accordance with guidance from the Construction Leadership Council.

Adrian Speller, Technical Director, said: “Since suspending all of our construction activity in March, we have been undertaking a process of thorough risk assessment of all COVID-19 and other associated health and safety risks across all of our business operations.

“On those sites where these risk assessments have given us confidence that work can recommence safely, we have now put strict control measures in place to allow for a safe, phased return to work.

“We have carefully tested and implemented new ways of working to ensure work can be carried out safely whilst ensuring social distancing. These measures include reduced numbers of operatives, one-way access around sites and phased start times and breaks. Enhanced hand-washing provision and increased cleaning regimes have also been put in place on all sites.

“The health, safety and wellbeing of all of our staff and those who come into contact with our construction sites remains Speller Metcalfe’s number one priority and we have worked very hard to take all steps necessary to ensure that our sites represent the safest working environments possible given the current circumstances.

“We continue to monitor the ongoing situation and are working hard to get all of our sites which remain closed back up and running as soon as we can do so safely.“

A number of Speller Metcalfe staff have been furloughed in line with reduced construction activity, however a core service remains across all head office functions. The pre-construction department continues to operate as usual and can be reached via the main switchboard on 01684 571200.
