Maternity Bereavement Suite, Walsgrave Hospital

Speller Metcalfe delivered a new £267,000 Maternity Bereavement Suite at University Hospital Coventry for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. Completed in February 2026 under a design and build contract, the 16-week refurbishment transformed four former maternity rooms into a dedicated, compassionate environment providing privacy and comfort for families experiencing baby loss.

Located within the live maternity department, the project involved the removal of existing birthing pools and clinical equipment before refurbishing the adjoining rooms and connecting corridor. The scheme included bespoke fitted furniture, new IPS panel systems, sanitaryware and upgraded internal finishes, creating a welcoming, non-clinical environment while maintaining the functionality required within a hospital setting.

Working in the heart of an operational maternity ward presented significant logistical challenges. Maintaining emergency access at all times was critical, leading to the installation of temporary hoarding with push-bar emergency access points. Careful planning of deliveries, close collaboration with Trust staff and rigorous noise control measures ensured the works were carried out safely with minimal disruption. Particular attention was given to acoustic performance to provide a peaceful and private setting for bereaved families.

The project demonstrated Speller Metcalfe’s ability to deliver sensitive healthcare refurbishments within live clinical environments, balancing technical requirements with the needs of patients, families and hospital staff.
