Speller Metcalfe reports strongest financial performance in company history

Speller Metcalfe has announced the strongest financial performance in its history, reporting a 48% increase in profit before tax (PBT) to £5.0m for the year ending 31 March 2026.

The Midlands and South West contractor achieved turnover of £158.9m while increasing its PBT margin from 2.1% to 3.15%. Gross profit margin also increased from 9.5% to 10.9%, while average cash balances rose from £23.6m to £32m, further strengthening the Group’s financial position and providing a solid platform for future investment and growth.

The business also delivered more than £62.8m of social value while increasing local supply chain spend by 53%, reinforcing its commitment to supporting regional economies and communities. Environmental performance also continued to improve, with carbon intensity reducing from 11.76 to 9.40 tCO₂e per £1m of turnover as the business progressed towards its Net Zero ambitions.

The results represent the second consecutive year of record profitability for Speller Metcalfe and reflect a long-term strategy focused on building a stronger, more resilient and more capable business rather than pursuing growth for growth’s sake.

Under the leadership of second-generation directors James and Adrian Speller, the company has continued to strengthen operational performance while maintaining the values and culture that have underpinned its success for more than 30 years.

Managing director, James Speller, commented: “Our strong financial performance has enabled the company to share its success directly with all of our employees through an additional profit-related distribution – equivalent to 20% of annual profits – which recognises the contribution made by colleagues across the Group.”

The business has also secured 98% of its budgeted turnover in contract or under PCSA for the next 12 months, reflecting the strength of its long-term client relationships, framework appointments and forward order book.

James continued: “The construction industry often talks about regional contractors and Tier One contractors as though clients have to choose between the two – we think that debate increasingly misses the point.

“Clients want trusted relationships, genuine partnership, responsive decision-making and accountability, but they also want the competence, governance and capability to deliver their most important and increasingly complex projects.

“We believe clients increasingly want a business that combines the strengths of both.

“Our ambition is not to become a larger version of somebody else. It is to build a business that combines those attributes and continues to set its own path.”

The company continues to invest heavily in these areas, supporting increasingly complex project delivery while maintaining the responsive, relationship-led approach that has defined the business throughout its history.

Managing Director, Adrian Speller, said: “The expectations placed upon contractors have changed significantly in recent years and Speller Metcalfe is at the forefront of industry change and innovation, providing our clients with confidence in our ability to deliver.

“Recent examples include achieving both ISO 27001 and BS 99001 certification – which places Speller Metcalfe among only a handful of UK contractors to hold both standards – an important milestone and reinforces our commitment to quality, resilience and continual improvement at a time when the Building Safety Act is raising standards across the industry.”

Looking ahead, Speller Metcalfe remains focused on sustainable growth, operational excellence and continued investment in its people, technology and capability.

With a strong balance sheet, high levels of secured workload and a clear long-term strategy, the company is well positioned to continue supporting clients, communities and supply chain partners for many years to come.
