MRI Suite Infrastructure Upgrade, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

Speller Metcalfe delivered a £1.5 million infrastructure upgrade at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to facilitate the installation of a new MRI suite. The project included the construction of a new plant deck, installation of a new air handling unit and associated mechanical and electrical services, together with modifications to existing plant serving the live hospital.

Working within a busy clinical environment, the team collaborated closely with clinicians and hospital stakeholders to carefully phase the works, carrying out key activities out of hours to minimise disruption. The project involved breaking through the existing roof structure to install new service risers, while maintaining access to surrounding departments and managing complex vehicle and pedestrian movements at one of the hospital’s busiest entrances.

The project required extensive collaborative working and coordination to manage service isolations, commissioning and planned plant shutdowns, and the team worked closely alongside CWP, Pag Consulting and Couch Consulting Engineers. Completed in November 2025, the scheme met all relevant HTM, HBN and University Hospitals Birmingham standards, demonstrating Speller Metcalfe’s expertise in delivering technically complex healthcare infrastructure within live operational hospital environments.
