Lionel Green Building Refurbishment, Hereford County Hospital

Speller Metcalfe delivered the £2 million refurbishment of the Lionel Green Building at Hereford County Hospital for Wye Valley NHS Trust, transforming a redundant former nurses’ accommodation block into modern office accommodation for administrative teams. The project created around 45 cellular offices across two floors, enabling staff to relocate from clinical areas within the hospital and releasing valuable space for frontline patient services.

The refurbishment involved stripping the building back to shell and core, undertaking structural alterations, upgrading internal finishes and carrying out targeted repairs to the external façade and balcony areas. Heavy demolition and structural works were carefully planned and completed out of hours to minimise disruption.

With a live NHS 111 call centre operating on the ground floor throughout the programme, maintaining uninterrupted service was a key priority. Careful logistics planning, strict patient safety measures and close collaboration with the Trust ensured the project was delivered safely within the operational hospital environment.

Completed in March 2026 through the ProCure23 Framework, is one in a long line of projects delivered for Wye Valley NHS Trust, reinforcing a strong collaborative relationship built on successfully delivering complex healthcare refurbishments.
