The first spade hits the ground as construction begins at Malvern Theatres’ landmark redevelopment project
Work has officially started on an exciting new chapter for one of Worcestershire’s most valued cultural landmarks – Malvern Theatres. This week, construction officially broke ground, kickstarting a new phase of development. The £20 million project, which is scheduled to open in late 2027, represents a significant investment in the Malvern Hills District, strengthening the region’s profile as a cultural destination.
Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, joined the project partners to celebrate the milestone moment ‘first spade in the ground’. Harriett has been involved in the theatre’s initiative since its inception and is a key supporter.
“I was honoured to be asked to dig the ceremonial first turf on the exciting Malvern Theatres expansion project that I have championed for many years. It is great to see work underway and I know we are all looking forward to seeing great new facilities in place in the heart of Malvern to inspire the next generation of performers and theatre staff. It is important that this project is a springboard to reach out to those people who may not already participate in the arts as well as talking to the regular theatre and cinema goers. I can’t wait to see how this project evolves.”
Construction is being delivered by Malvern-based contractor, Speller Metcalfe, who focus on working closely with local supply chains in the areas in which they work. The company has key experience in low-carbon construction and aims to deliver lasting social and economic benefits throughout the construction process. The Malvern Theatres project will provide hundreds of local construction jobs, supporting skills and employment in the area.
Adrian Speller, managing director at Speller Metcalfe, said: “The start of works at Malvern Theatres marks an exciting milestone, and we’re pleased to be working once again with Malvern Hills District Council to deliver the next phase of redevelopment.
“As a Malvern‑based contractor, it’s particularly rewarding to return to a project of such importance to the town, having previously delivered the Phase 1 works.”
The whole redevelopment has been designed by award-winning architects Burrell Foley Fischer, who have an enviable reputation for specialising in cultural projects, combining creative vision with technical expertise to deliver inspiring and functional spaces.
The brand-new world-class venue will see a new 240-seat studio theatre, improvements to the forum theatre, workshop spaces, and a community amphitheatre. An upgraded park-side entrance will enhance access to the theatres.
The groundbreaking project, which has secured the funding from the UK Government’s Local Regeneration Fund (formerly known as the Levelling Up Fund), is being led by Malvern Hills District Council in partnership with Malvern Theatres.
Cllr John Gallagher, Leader and Portfolio Holder for Resources at Malvern Hills District Council said: “With construction now underway, our ambitious vision has turned into reality and is a proud moment. Breaking ground signals our commitment to creativity, community, and economic growth, delivering a world‑class venue that will inspire audiences, artists, and the wider community for generations to come.”
Fred Moroni, Chief Executive Officer at Malvern Theatres, added: “Today marks a milestone moment in the transformation of Malvern Theatres. The landmark redevelopment project is now underway and will lead to a raft of improvements and new venues at the theatre, which will open up greater opportunities and a wider programme for people to access and engage in the arts regionally.”
