State-of-the-art resus facilities open at Russells Hall Hospital Emergency Department
The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust has officially opened their brand new, state-of-the-art resus facilities, located at the Trust’s Russells Hall Hospital emergency department.
The enhanced resuscitation space was designed by AFL Architects and delivered by Speller Metcalfe following a successful redevelopment bid by the Trust in 2020, with the ambition of revolutionising the emergency department care and offering immediate support in meeting current and future patient demand for resuscitation capacity over the next 10 years.
Facilities include dedicated paediatric areas and new isolation rooms that will help facilitate appropriate and safe care in the event of future pandemics or outbreaks.
There is also an improved bereavement suite that will provide bereaved relatives and carers a more comfortable space to receive support and privacy as they come to terms with their loss.

This £12m ground-breaking development brings new technology and equipment to the department to support the NHS’s focus on a move from analogue to digital innovation in healthcare environments, including a digital medicine system to improve the storing, usage and prescribing of drugs to patients.
Dudley Group chief executive Diane Wake said: “The vision for this incredible project began prior to the COVID pandemic and it is a great honour and a real testament to the hard work and determination of so many people to be able to open this new development.
“It is a defining moment for our Trust and will have huge benefits not only for the people of Dudley and the wider Black Country community, but also for our staff through revolutionary new facilities and care equipment that they can utilise in full.”
Dudley Mayor Councillor Peter Lee, local members of parliament, Mike Wood MP, Cat Eccles MP and Sonia Kumar MP and numerous hospital staff came together to officially cut the ribbon ahead of the space opening to the public.
Alongside the main build, Speller Metcalfe completed the fit out of the scheme, getting it ready for clinical use, as well as the external car parking works. The scheme has also been designed to meet BREEAM excellent sustainability standards, supporting the Trust on its sustainability journey.
Rob Lashford, regional director at Speller Metcalfe said: “Working in a live hospital is always a complex and sensitive undertaking, with the building operating 24/7, and it is fantastic to see the Trust able to realise its transformation plans, which are already having an immediate positive impact on the patient experience and staff operations.”
The development will also maximise support for the Trust’s staff with the opportunity to now have areas for specialist training, building on the Trust’s personal development framework and goal of securing university status.
The redevelopment was managed by Trust’s Private Finance Initiative partners Mitie and Summit Healthcare.
