National Star College

Working for repeat client National Star Foundation following two earlier successful contracts, Speller Metcalfe was contracted through a two-stage tender process to deliver a range of extra care accommodation to meet the expanding needs of the College and replace another outdated site at Bradbury Gardens.

Originally a Greenfield site, the land borders a primary school, residential road and a lake bordering the adjacent boundary.

The accommodation was built in five small clusters and was designed to meet the complex needs of National Star College’s learner, providing them with the specialist facilities needed to live their daily lives including single en-suite bedrooms with overhead tracking hoists, assistive technology and height adjustable kitchens and baths.

Following initial enabling works which included sewerage diversion, Speller Metcalfe delivered five separate blocks of student accommodation, comprising a mix of multi-storey and single-storey use with the fifth block also being utilised as a teaching and activity space.

The new accommodation scheme won the award for ‘Most Inclusive Building’ in the West of England at the Regional LABC Awards.
