GROUND-BREAKING SUSTAINABLE HOME WINS GREEN APPLE AWARD

The award ceremony is being held at the House of Commons, London on November 12th 2012 where it will be revealed whether Speller Metcalfe has won the bronze, silver or gold Green Apple award.

The awards recognise environmental and sustainable best practice and the extent to which business are contributing to sustainability.

The eco vicarages built on behalf of the Diocese of Worcester intend to reduce the Church of England’s carbon footprint by 80% over the next few years.

The zero carbon projects incorporates a range of sustainable features meeting the highest Government standards for domestic buildings – Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) Level 6 – which takes into account factors such as energy and water use, materials, pollution and ecology.

As well as meeting CSH standards, the property also conforms to the standards of the German ‘Passivhaus’ model for energy efficiency in a building, reducing its ecological footprint.

The developments itself includes a masonry build with eco blocks and 250mm of insulation, triple glazed windows and recycled newspaper for loft insulation. Sustainable technologies include a Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, solar panels and photovoltaic systems (PV).
