Contractor announced for £4.5M leisure centre works

Active Nation has appointed regional contractor Speller Metcalfe to undertake a £4.5m extension scheme at Filton Leisure Centre in Bristol.

The package of works includes demolishing the existing reception area and changing rooms and constructing a new extension on the side of the existing swimming pool.

A new single point of entry will be created for the leisure centre through the extension, which will include a new reception, café and soft play area.

The focus of the construction is to expand the facilities around the swimming pool area including both wet and dry side changing, alongside improvements to the look and feel of the building.

A viewing area will also be located beside the pool, not far from the new soft play facilities.

“These works will have a hugely positive impact on the experience of our centre users” says Stuart Martin, Managing Director, Active Nation. “This investment will see the facilities consolidated and modernised to provide an activity hub much more in-tune with the modern needs of our community whilst also futureproofing the provision.”

After finishing the extension, Speller Metcalfe will be demolishing adjacent pub, the Rate Payers Arms, to make room for more car parking, landscaping and an external changing room for football pitch users.

Mark Hudgeon, Divisional Director at Speller Metcalfe said: “We are delighted to be delivering this extension scheme for Active Nation. We have completed several leisure centre projects in recent years, ranging from refurbishments to large new centres, so we are excited to begin on this site and will be ensuring that customers are at the heart of the leisure centre.”

Speller Metcalfe is working with Active Nation and Filton Town Council to provide the smoothest transition to the new facility. During construction works, the swimming pool provision will remain open and leisure facilities will continue to be accessible for the community.

Alongside this, a temporary facility will provide alternative access to the reception area and temporary parking will also be made available, with both the council and Active Nation encouraging members of the public to consider the local area in terms of sustainable transport.

The project team want to thank everyone for their patience during the transition to the amazing new facility for Filton.

Speller Metcalfe will be working alongside Architects Watson Batty, who they have collaborated with on a number of projects in the past.

The extension is due to complete in Autumn 2023.
