£26M IPI project underway at Dudley College of Technology

Dudley College of Technology has announced that their new Institute of Transformational Technologies will be delivered using the Integrated Project Insurance (IPI) model.

The College has assembled an Alliance Partnership between Speller Metcalfe, Derry Building Services, Fulcro Group, Cullinan Studio Architects, Cundall and GCA Consulting to deliver the scheme.

The £26 million ‘Institute of Transformational Technologies’ (IoTT) aims to transform the economy of the Black Country and the Marches and address the legacy of decline across the region, through an industry-led collaboration between employers and Higher and Further Education.

Courses will provide level 4 training in technical sectors that currently suffer from high skills shortages, including higher-level degree Apprenticeships in advanced manufacturing, modern construction methodologies and medical engineering. Career pathways that the centre will focus on include product design engineers, manufacturing technology engineers, digital engineering technicians (BIM), construction assembly technicians, science industry maintenance technicians and biomedical systems engineers.

The project team announcement comes after the College’s successful bid to re-develop a plot of land close to Dudley town centre was given initial in principle approval by the Department for Education.

The institute will be the College’s second project to be delivered using the innovative IPI approach – one of the preferred, alternative procurement models outlined in the Government Construction Strategy 2011-2015 – and follows the successful completion of the award-winning Advance II which was the UK’s first IPI project at Dudley College of Technology in 2017.

Principal contractor Speller Metcalfe, Project Co-ordinator Fulcro Group and Derry Building Services have all rejoined the team from the build of Advance II.

IPI involves a collaborative working contract that sees all members of the integrated project team selected at the project’s inception to form an interdisciplinary ‘alliance board’ that are insured together under a single loss-based insurance product. The model supports innovation by aligning the team around cost, time and quality, promoting a culture of mutual trust, no blame/no claim and allowing freedom for decisions to be made on a best for project basis.

The whole scheme will be facilitated by IPInitiatives who developed and own the Integrated Project Insurance product.

A joint statement from IPInitiatives and Dudley College of Technology, said: “We are very pleased we have made such a positive start to the IoTT project.

“The learning from our first project together is already reaping reward and we have clearly appointed a highly professional and dedicated team which will make this project a success.

“The IPI Model works to bring a truly collaborative team together with no contractual or insurance barriers and we are looking forward to getting the “best for project” result for the Institute, employers and the region.”
