SPELLER METCALFE ANNOUNCED AS APPROVED CONTRACTOR FOR £17M HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT

The works make up Phase 1 of a major redevelopment, which is part of a £22m overall package for the hospital, to provide the best in healthcare facilities for patients and meet increasing demand which has seen a 17% increase for cancer-related illnesses in just one year.

“Following a two-stage tender we are delighted to announce Speller Metcalfe as the approved contractor for this fantastic redevelopment on behalf of South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust,” said Steve Speller, Joint Managing Director at Speller Metcalfe.

“This will be our third project undertaken for the Trust following the successful completion of a state-of-the-art Neuro Rehabilitation Centre at Leamington Spa Hospital in 2013 and a new three-storey orthopaedic ward for Warwick Hospital which has just started on site.”

Speller Metcalfe will be responsible for construction of Stratford Hospital’s new energy centre and multi-storey car park as well as construction of a new three-storey hospital, which is inclusive of all fitting out, M&E and associated external works.

The new hospital incorporates a cancer unit with 12 treatment chairs and two side rooms including counselling rooms and an outpatient facility, doubling the Trust’s capacity to provide cancer services. This additional facility will also ensure that any emergency cancer patients are seen in a specialist unit rather than adding pressure to A&E services.

A new eye unit will also sit in the new hospital, which provides facilities for retinal surgery and an outpatient suite with examination, treatment and injection rooms. This will particularly help older, local patients with age-related macular degeneration who rely on monthly injections and currently travel further afield for care.

The proposed site forms part of the main hospital which remains live throughout the build, with the new three-storey hospital situated within the footprint of an existing plant room, associated buildings and car park which were demolished as part of the enabling works.
