£5m new day house for Rugby School

A ground-breaking ceremony has marked the start of a project to build a new £5 million day house and dining halls at Rugby School.

National building contractor Speller Metcalfe has been contracted to undertake the project which will see a new, three-storey shared day house built between the school’s two existing day houses.

The building will sit within a central, open courtyard and will incorporate study rooms for 60 pupils, new common rooms and kitchenettes, tutor rooms and two 150-seater dining halls for use by Southfield and Town House students.

The project is part of a programme of major refurbishment and improvement for the school that will help to meet the increased demand for students taking day places

Rugby School Estates Manager, Judith Robinson, said: “After two years of detailed preparation, it is so exciting to be on site and to see our plans for the expansion of the day houses start to become reality.

Speller Metcalfe has made a great start on constructing the extension, which has been beautifully designed by TSH Architects to fit into the sensitive Conservation Area setting in Horton Crescent.”

Speller Metcalfe Group Managing Director, Des O’Neill said: “We are very pleased to be working with new client Rugby School on this exciting project which will provide highly sustainable, quality facilities for the school.

We bring with us a wealth of experience of working on education projects and will be collaborating closely with the school to ensure minimal disruption is caused to pupils, staff and the surrounding areas.”

The project which is scheduled for completion in Summer 2019 will allow the school to take on an additional 60 day pupils, bringing the total number of day spaces available to 200.
