Speller Metcalfe delivers strong profits and sustainable growth under second-generation leadership

Family-run contractor Speller Metcalfe is celebrating a year of strong financial results, strategic growth, and continued investment in innovation and people – reinforcing its position as one of the UK’s most forward-thinking, sustainable construction businesses.

Despite the ongoing challenges across the industry, the contractor has delivered a £3.4 million pre-tax profit and grown turnover to £162.4 million, while maintaining robust project margins and a strong cash position. This performance reflects a sustainable, long-term growth strategy underpinned by a five-year financial plan.

“We’re proud to be delivering strong results by staying true to who we are – a family business grounded in long-term thinking, not short-term wins,” said managing director James Speller.
“Our strategy is built on close collaboration with clients and a supply chain that shares our values and culture. By focusing on open and honest conversations and addressing challenges early, we ensure projects keep moving forward without compromise.”

Led by second-generation directors James and Adrian Speller, the company’s USP is pairing Tier One capability with the agility and values of a family-run business. Throughout the past year, it has refined its divisional targets, enhanced operational oversight, and exceeded business development goals – including a 73% framework success rate and significant growth in key accounts.

Sustainability also lies at the heart of Speller Metcalfe’s approach – building a business that is resilient, responsible and collaborative; one that adapts to cost pressures, navigates market volatility and actively shapes a better industry while delivering long-term value for clients and communities alike.

“Whether that’s through safer delivery models, knowledge sharing under our Bill Munn Knowledge Series CPD events, or more inclusive practices, James and I see ourselves as custodians of this second-generation family business,” says managing director, Adrian Speller. “We’re not here to make a quick return and walk away – we’re committed to reinvesting profits back into Speller Metcalfe to support future generations and ensure the company remains innovative, resilient and ready for the years ahead.”

The business is currently on a journey to Net Zero by 2032 and remains fully committed to achieving this within the timescales set out in its long-term strategy. Highlights from the past year include a 10% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, a growing EV and hybrid fleet, and the delivery of £74.6 million in social value return.

Speller Metcalfe has also accelerated its digital transformation, proactively led on the implementation of the Building Safety Act, and integrated drone technology for project monitoring.

Internally, the company has prioritised people and culture, with an average staff turnover of just 8.08% – well below industry averages. Speller Metcalfe continues to invest in progression, wellbeing, EDI, and competency development, creating a supportive and values-led working environment.

Looking ahead, the company has secured close to £140 million of turnover for the 2025/26 financial year. Beyond this, a further £100 million of projects secured through Project Construction Services Agreements (PCSAs) will extend the pipeline well into the next financial year, reflecting a robust and confident future order book.

Speller Metcalfe’s achievements have also earned it a shortlist place for Contractor of the Year (under £500m turnover) at the 2025 Building Awards – widely regarded as one of the most prestigious honours in UK construction, recognising excellence across financial performance, sustainability, innovation, and leadership.

With a strong foundation and a growing pipeline aligned to its long-term strategy, the company is well-positioned for continued, sustainable success.
