Speller Metcalfe celebrates 30 years in business

Malvern-based construction company Speller Metcalfe marked its 30th anniversary this month with a spectacular family festival, SpellStock.

Bringing together over 550 staff, their partners, families and long-standing collaborators for a day of celebrations, the party was the second festival of its kind for the business, following a smaller celebration in 2015 to mark the company’s 20th year.

Founded in 1995 by Steve Speller and Andy Metcalfe, the company has grown from Steve’s garage into one of Worcestershire’s largest businesses. Today, Speller Metcalfe is recognised as one of the UK’s leading regional contractors, with a turnover of more than £160 million and offices in Malvern and Wolverhampton.

The festival reflected Speller Metcalfe’s values of family, collaboration and sustainability, with huge tents, camping and campervans, and a full day packed with entertainment. Guests enjoyed five live bands – including Swing from Paris, Garfunkel, The Breaks and Urban Folk Quartet – plus a headline DJ set from one of the company’s own Commercial Managers, Barrie Jones.

Alongside street food from Bromsgrove-based Ascott’s, the festival featured family-friendly activities such as face painting, pottery throwing workshops, giant inflatables, and daytime performances from street entertainer Dan the Hat and comedian Keith Donnelly.

Adrian Speller, Joint Managing Director, said: “Reaching 30 years is a huge milestone for us as a family business. SpellStock was our way of saying thank you to our staff, who are the beating heart of Speller Metcalfe. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the dedication and hard work of our teams, and it was a privilege to celebrate this anniversary alongside their families.”

James Speller, Joint Managing Director, added: “It’s been incredible to see how far we’ve come since our early days, and SpellStock was a perfect way to celebrate both our history and our future. It truly captured what makes us unique – a family business at scale, with collaboration, honesty and care at our core.”

The event, which took over a year of planning and included family members helping behind the scenes, was warmly received by attendees:

  • Emma Price, Social Value Coordinator, said:
“SpellStock was just fabulous – all the acts, food and set up were amazing. My family loved it, and my son even said: ‘Mum, you work for the best company’. The amount of thought, work and care that went into the event was really evident.”
  • Karl Greenway, Director at Lett + Sweetland Architects, added:
“What a fabulous day it was, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was particularly lovely to reconnect with old colleagues and friends – we hope to see you again at SpellStock 2035!”

SpellStock 2025 was not just a celebration of the past 30 years, but also a statement of intent for the next chapter of Speller Metcalfe’s journey as a forward-thinking, family-driven contractor.

The anniversary also comes at an exciting time for the business, with Speller Metcalfe shortlisted for Contractor of the Year at the national Building Awards this November – one of the UK construction industry’s most prestigious honours, recognising not just the projects delivered, but the way the whole business operates, from staff development and support to fostering a positive, collaborative culture.
