The Sister Dora Building

New simulation labs and teaching rooms for the University of Wolverhampton

Project

The Sister Dora Building

Speller Metcalfe was appointed to refurbish and extend facilities for the Institute of Health at the University’s Walsall Campus via the University of Wolverhampton Contractor’s Framework.

The development included the refurbishment of part of the existing building and the construction of a two-storey extension to provide new simulation labs and teaching rooms and cater for an increasing number of students on healthcare courses including midwifery and paramedic science.

Facilities include a number of true-to-life ‘replica’ hospital wards, fitted out with specialist filming equipment which allows students to watch back a ‘patients eye view’ of the skills they have been practising. There is also a replica operating theatre created and a large clinical skills area.

A selection of new flexible teaching spaces have also been formed and the lobby has been fully refurbished.

Works were carried out in a live University campus environment.
