Speller Metcalfe was contracted by repeat client, King’s School in Worcester, to build a new boathouse to replace the school’s existing and impractical 1950s boat shed.
The striking building was designed to echo the shape of a boat and includes the following facilities:
- Secure storage for more than 46 boats and equipment without the need to detach riggers, in line with current health & safety standards
- Training space including rowing machines and other exercise equipment
- Changing facilities
- Kitchen facilities
- Office/workshop
The two storey building elevates the main habitable spaces to first floor level, offering views along the River Severn in both directions from a glazed cantilevered riverside prow. In comparison to the original boathouse, the elevated structure gives the building a greater presence in the streetscape and becomes a jewel-like focal point along the Riverside.
The building was constructed in accordance with Passivhaus standards, with the development incorporating super-insulation, air tightness and mixed mode natural and heat-recovery ventilation to minimise energy consumption.
