15 years after it was built, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) contracted Speller Metcalfe to undertake a £1.3 million ‘upgrade and refresh’ project covering work in five distinct areas including a transformation of the reception area and a number of changes made in the auditorium to enhance acoustics, lighting and seating.
The project included:
- Internal works to the foyer, bar area and kitchen (including new lift installation);
- Works within the main hall (lighting and acoustic improvements, and new seating);
- External works to the building fabric including roof repairs and replacement of the window blinds with solar shading on the Holliday Street elevation;
- General energy/climate-related replacements (new office lighting and boilers);
- Other sundry works within the building (e.g. public meeting room upgrades).
