Passivhaus

A fabric-first approach

Speller Metcalfe has delivered numerous Passivhaus buildings including those built to meet Passivhaus standards and those aspiring to Passivhaus principles.

What is Passivhaus?

Passivhaus is a fabric-first approach to construction that is closing the building ‘performance gap’ – the difference in actual energy consumption of a building versus what was intended at design stage.

The Passivhaus standard relies on three simple principles:

  • Constructing a building which is incredibly airtight;
  • Delivering excellent thermal performance;
  • Employing mechanical ventilation systems to recover heat loss where possible to reduce demand.

This approach not only ensures a better quality building, but delivers very low energy buildings and consequently reduces energy bills by up to 90%.
