What is Passivhaus?
Passivhaus is a fabric-first approach to construction that is closing the building ‘performance gap’ – the difference in actual energy consumption of a building versus what was intended at design stage.
The Passivhaus standard relies on three simple principles:
- Constructing a building which is incredibly airtight;
- Delivering excellent thermal performance;
- Employing mechanical ventilation systems to recover heat loss where possible to reduce demand.
This approach not only ensures a better quality building, but delivers very low energy buildings and consequently reduces energy bills by up to 90%.
