zero carbon house

Project

zero carbon house

Speller Metcalfe delivered the UK’s first zero carbon deep retrofit home at Tindal Street, Birmingham, converting the 1840 2-bed house into a 4-bed home.

Designed by homeowner and architect, John Christophers, it has no need to use fossil fuels. No carbon is released into the atmosphere from this unique family home and there are no fuel bills either. zero carbon house was also the UK’s first zero carbon retrofit – the only existing house to have been upgraded to one of the most exacting standards in green design at the time of building, Level 6 of the original UK Code for Sustainable Homes.

The build places energy efficiency and ecology at the heart of the building fabric, while providing comfortable living accommodation heated and ventilated by natural sources only.

zero carbon house is not a certified Passivhaus as no Passivhaus certification of existing buildings was possible at the time it was designed. Nonetheless, zero carbon house exceeds the Passivhaus standards for measuring heating and energy demands and airtightness in many aspects.
