Transformation of mental health provision in Worcestershire

Project

The Elgar Unit, Worcestershire

Speller Metcalfe was contracted by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust to improve the Elgar Unit in Worcester.

The £11 million scheme provides patients  with private, en-suite rooms through the removal of outdated shared dormitory style quarters, and forms part of a £400 million, UK-wide scheme, the ‘Elimination of Dormitories’.

The new facilities will improve the safety, privacy and dignity of patients experiencing mental ill health.

Two old, single-storey wards, Holt and Athelon, were demolished and reconstructed to form part of the existing Elgar Unit, creating 30 new bedrooms.

Both wards have access to a newly refurbished courtyard area, as well as living and kitchen areas.

The project has been built to the BREEAM Very Good standard.
