Transformation of mental health provision in Worcestershire

Project

The Elgar Unit, Worcestershire

Speller Metcalfe has been contracted by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust to improve the Elgar Unit in Worcester.

The £11 million scheme will provide patients private, en-suite rooms through the removal of outdated shared sleeping quarters. This is part of  a £400 million, UK-wide scheme, ‘The Elimination of Dormitories’.

The new facilities will improve the safety, privacy and dignity of patients experiencing mental ill health.

Two old, single-storey wards, Holt and Athelon, will be demolished and reconstructed to form part of the existing Elgar Unit, creating 30 new bedrooms.

Both wards will have access to a newly refurbished courtyard area, as well as living and kitchen areas.

The project will complete in late 2023 and is being built to the BREEAM Very Good standard.
