Breast Unit, Royal Worcester Hospital

Based at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Speller Metcalfe was appointed to carry out the £1.84m breast screening construction programme, which has expanded the site by more than two thirds.

The project has seen two single-storey extensions built onto the existing unit to improve services; the larger extension incorporating treatment rooms, consultants offices and general healthcare facilities and the smaller extension housing administrative offices.

This scheme means Worcestershire can now deliver state-of-the-art breast imaging facilities, using the latest breast imaging technology. It has also enabled the service to relocate its base from Princess of Wales Hospital, Bromsgrove to the Worcester site.

Alongside the additional screening and ultrasound facilities, the extension will enable weekend screenings to ease NHS service pressures and reduce waiting times, and provides nationally accredited training to develop and recruit the future Herefordshire & Worcestershire Breast Radiology workforce.
