Valuing the communities in which we operate – and the individuals who live and work in them – is intrinsic to how Speller Metcalfe does business.
We are committed to contributing to a better society, providing positive and sustainable social, environmental and economic benefits to the communities in which we work, in line with our core company values.
Supporting our clients
As well as working to our own Social Value Charter, Speller Metcalfe is committed to supporting our clients and partners in achieving their own social value aspirations.
We work from tender stage to identify legacy projects that will positively impact on a scheme and its local community, whether it be employment opportunities, upskilling, fundraising, family fun days, mental health support or just donating materials to a local school, we want to make our lasting impression is a positive one.
Measuring social value
Speller Metcalfe implements social value calculators to ensure our commitments made at project inception are achievable and realistic. This also allows us to accurately report on the progress made towards them as the project progresses, sharing the results with our clients and producing a final report at the conclusion of the scheme.
The calculators allocate a financial value to each activity which reflects the return on investment to the communities in which we work. Our project teams are all aware of the requirements set out by the social value calculators and work with our Social Value Lead to provide evidence to upload into the calculators.

Supporting change
At Speller Metcalfe, we’re not afraid to shout out and support issues we feel strongly about. We advocate honesty and transparency as a business and in our operations, as well as addressing taboo subjects to raise awareness. Most recently this has included:
- International Women’s Day
- Time to Talk
- Menopausal awareness
- Pride

Considerate Constructors Scheme
The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) is a not-for-profit organisation that partners with the construction industry to raise standards and build public trust. Its code of practice emphasizes collaboration, strong communication, community support, high health and safety standards, and minimizing environmental impact.
Our partnership with CCS helps us make a positive impact on clients and communities, and we encourage others in the industry, including supply chain partners, to join. Learn more about the benefits of the scheme at ccscheme.org.uk.

Part of our education programme, Buzz Sitegear is one of the most important members of Speller Metcalfe – our mascot who represents the very best of the construction industry.
Buzz regularly visits schools to teach pupils about the importance of safety and construction, and has lots of great tools and resources to make learning fun.
If we are working on a project near you, you might be in for a visit! If you aware of a Speller Metcalfe project locally, and would like Buzz to visit your school, please contact your local Speller Metcalfe office today.

Environmental impact
We strive to manage our environmental impact by taking a responsible and proactive approach that focuses on innovation, responsibility, and continuous improvement – and where possible exceeds industry regulations – to help us shape a more sustainable future for the places where we work.
Our teams are audited and supported by a specialist environmental team, that recognise best practice through quarterly environmental awards.
