Speller Metcalfe is first and foremost and family company, which was started in response to two disgruntled quantity surveyors who wanted to do things better.
Formed in 1995 by Steve Speller and Andy Metcalfe, their vision was to create a business centred around honesty, transparency and family values, which we are pleased to say is what our ethos and vision continue to be based upon – albeit we have picked up a few more values along the way.
The early years
2015: Spellstock
Celebrating 20 years in business, staff and their families took to a pub in Herefordshire to enjoy live music, camping, the best burgers around and drinks on Andy and Steve!
2015: Contractor of the Year (Construction News)
Speller Metcalfe wins our first Contractor of the Year award from Construction News, going up against national Tier 1 contractors, including the team who delivered the Shard in the same year.
2017: Contractor of the Year (Building)
Two years later we went onto win the prestigious Building Awards Contractor of the Year accolade, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and excellence in construction.
2020: 25 years in business
Speller Metcalfe celebrates another milestone – 25 years in business. Unfortunately we were unable to get together in person due to the pandemic, but celebrated in spirit with a fantastic newsletter highlighting all of our achievements and staff experiences across the last 25 years.
2022: The next generation
Steve Speller announces his retirement, with son James named as Managing Director, supported by brother Adrian as our Technical Director.
2024: Andy Metcalfe retires
In 2024, joint-founder and owner of Speller Metcalfe, Andy Metcalfe, announced his retirement.
Andy spent almost 30 years developing and shaping in the company into the leading regional contractor it has become today, and has overseen many UK firsts (and even a world-first) during his tenure. In conjunction with Andy’s retirement, the Speller family acquired his shares, ensuring the company’s future remains secure within the family business.
