Western Power Distribution Swansea

Speller Metcalfe was appointed by repeat-client, Western Power Distribution (WPD) to deliver a new depot and vehicle maintenance facility in Swansea, following the demise of another contractor who had originally started the scheme.

The WPD Swansea scheme comprised construction of a new-build garage facility and the conversion and refurbishment of an existing two-storey building unit for offices, a call centre and storage purposes. The site had previously been used by Pure Water International.

The project achieved BREEAM 2014 ‘Very Good’ and follows previous successful BREEAM projects for WPD, including the Spilsby scheme in Lincolnshire which was named as the highest rated BREEAM Outstanding project in the world, achieving 101.9% in 2013.

A key challenge faced on this project was delivery of the works during the COVID-19 pandemic. A pragmatic and responsible attitude was taken to ensure the health and safety of all staff and contractors working on site, working in line with government and construction industry regulations and Speller Metcalfe’s own comprehensive COVID-19 management procedures.
