Edmonds Transplant Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

Speller Metcalfe delivered the £5 million Edmonds Transplant Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, creating a modern facility that brings together the Trust’s multidisciplinary transplant team within a single department. Funded by University Hospitals Birmingham Charity, with a £4 million donation from the Edmonds family, the centre includes consulting rooms, treatment spaces, staff welfare facilities and offices, supporting one of Europe’s leading organ transplant services.

The project was critical to the Trust’s clinical strategy and required rapid delivery to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency. Speller Metcalfe joined the project after the original RIBA Stage 4 design had exceeded the available budget and programme. Working collaboratively with the Trust and design team, we reviewed the proposals to deliver a compliant, value-engineered solution that met the required timescales without compromising quality.

Located within the hospital’s historic building, the refurbishment presented significant challenges, including ageing infrastructure, constrained services, asbestos and outdated MEP installations. Equally important was maintaining uninterrupted clinical services throughout construction. With live departments surrounding the project on all sides, careful planning, phased works and close collaboration with hospital teams ensured neighbouring services continued to operate safely with minimal disruption.
